EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
